About This Test

FWAT 2 evaluates social confidence and stability in group settings. This intermediate foundation test focuses on appropriate behaviour around people and controlled environments. Dogs demonstrating social soundness earn the Foundation Working Dog Level 2 (FWD-2) certificate.

Handler guidance and encouragement are permitted throughout the test. Dogs must have successfully passed FWAT 1 before entering.

Part 1

Crowd Navigation

7 minutes

Small group tolerance

Dog walks through group of 3–4 people with handler. People engage in normal conversation. Dog should remain calm and controllable.

Child interaction

If a child is present, supervised brief interaction. Dog should be gentle and appropriate.

Stranger greetings

2–3 strangers approach individually to greet handler. Dog should accept their presence without fear or aggression.

Part 2

Controlled Distractions

5 minutes

Food temptation

Handler drops treat on ground; dog should show some control when told to 'leave it' or 'wait.'

Toy distraction

Interesting toy placed nearby while dog performs a simple task with handler.

Part 3

Recovery and Settling

3 minutes

End-of-test settling

Dog should be able to settle and relax after testing activities.

Basic impulse control

Dog demonstrates ability to wait briefly for handler's permission.
