Title Earned
FWAT 1 evaluates fundamental temperament and confidence levels. This entry-level test focuses on basic social skills and environmental adaptability. Dogs demonstrating basic soundness earn the Foundation Working Dog Level 1 (FWD-1) title.
Handler guidance and encouragement are permitted throughout the test. Perfect for young dogs, rescues, or first-time participants — no prior testing experience required.
Social approach
Judge approaches dog and handler in a friendly manner, speaks to handler while dog observes. Dog may be curious, neutral, or slightly reserved but should not show fear or aggression.
Gentle examination
Judge may touch dog's head/shoulders with handler's permission. Dog should tolerate brief contact.
Strange object introduction
Large unusual object (traffic cone, tarp, etc.) placed 10 feet away. Dog may investigate, ignore, or show mild caution but should not panic.
Sound exposure
Moderate noises (hand clapping, metal bucket drop, keys jingling). Dog may startle initially but should investigate or recover quickly.
Surface walking
Dog walks over different textures (tarp, wooden board, gravel) on leash with handler encouragement.
Basic attention
Handler calls dog's name and moves around. Dog should show some focus on handler.
Simple commands
Handler attempts basic commands dog knows (sit, stay, come). Performance quality not judged — only willingness to engage with handler.
Play interaction
Handler initiates play with toy or game. Dog may engage enthusiastically or show mild interest.
