Intermediate Breed Specific Test
The IABBR Intermediate BST closely evaluates temperament, such as stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and the dog's natural working instinct for protectiveness towards its handler and/or self-preservation in the face of a threat. BST 1 is more advanced than the basic test and involves visual stimulation scenarios.
The Silver Level test should be the gold standard that all breeders work toward achieving prior to breeding. It includes a courage test and evaluates the dog's response to threatening situations, visual novel stimuli, and its defensive capabilities.
The handler is not allowed to talk to the dog, or give corrections except in parts where commands are necessary. Dogs will be given either a pass or fail. Dogs that fail must wait a minimum of three months to retake the test.
The dog is held on a loose leash, can be standing or sitting. Helper is released from the blind to join dog with no sleeve worn. Handler is approached and greeted within 3 feet. Handler may remain on short leash. Dog must be under control of handler. An assertive dog is allowed to be restrained by handler but must be on control.
Dog is held on loose leash 5-10m from blind. Helper is released and approaches in a fast, agitated, aggressive manner with no equipment. Dog is expected to show defensive, alert nature. Handler is anchored. Dog should extend between threat and handler making leash taut.
A dog that does not recover to put self between threat and handler making leash taut is failed. The dog is then led to the 2ft hurdle jump. Dog must leap the hurdle, stationary or at pace (2 retries allowed).
Dog is walked on loose leash towards helper that is seated. Helper extends umbrella. Dog is allowed to investigate. Without warning, helper opens umbrella in the face of the dog.
